Thomas Grove House sits in a beautiful elevated position, facing south over the valley towards Brotherswater and the great cliffs of Hart Crag in the far distance. Situated in the heart of the village next to our neighbours’ working sheep farm, and set back above the narrow village lane that leads up onto the high fells, the airy, panoramic views from the house are truly wonderful.
A stone path leads to the rear of the property, at the end of which is the entrance to Thomas Grove House. You enter into the kitchen, formerly the dairy of the house. Just down the hall are lots of coat hooks and a shower room with basin, WC, washer/dryer, and space to dry wet walking gear. There is a 30 ft sitting/dining room with a Morso wood stove at each end, comfortable sofa and chairs, large dining table that seats up to 12, handsome dresser, views across the valleys from the generous window seats, and a glazed front door leading to the 19th century stone porch and garden beyond. A weathered oak floor leads up a small step from the dining area to the reclaimed kitchen with original slate floor and large electric range cooker in the converted bread oven hearth.
The old oak staircase from the hallway leads up to four bedrooms, spread around a generous open landing - one twin to the rear, and to the front, all with exceptional views across the valley to Brotherswater and the encircling hills beyond, a lovely single and two doubles. Each of the bedrooms has comfortable mattresses, reclaimed and antique furniture, limewash walls, handmade kelim rugs, and original wooden floors brought back to life. The family bathroom has a bath with drench shower over, basin and WC.
Thomas Grove House has its own front garden studded with bulbs in the spring, enclosed by dry stone walls that formed the farm’s sheep pens in the past, and a raised stone terrace with outdoor seating – a perfect place to enjoy the breath-taking views on all sides across Brotherswater to Dove Crag, and to Hartsop Dodd and the High Street range. On the driveway shared with Thomas Cottage, there is parking for two cars for Thomas Grove House.
There is TV/DVD (basic Sky channels), iPod dock, landline phone (no mobile reception at the house), and limited broadband sufficient for surfing and email. Due to bandwidth, downloading is not possible.
